4-day nationwide polio vaccination campaign kicks off

4-day nationwide polio vaccination campaign kicks off

Mar 12, 2018 - 20:42

KABUL (Pajhwok): Concerned about the presence of poliovirus in parts of the country, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Monday launched a four-day nationwide vaccination campaign involving 68,000 volunteers.

Deputy health minister Dr. Fida Mohammad Paikan, while launching the campaign in Kabul, said polio workers would visit each house countrywide during the four-day drive.

An estimated 9.9 million children would be administered polio drops and 8.9 million children aged between five and six years would be provided with vitamin A capsules.

He added 41 districts had been excluded from the campaign due to cold weather and the campaign would be launched there after one month.

He asked ulema, influential people, youth and media to cooperate with MoPH in implementation of the anti-polio drive.

Adele Khodr, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan, said: “We have not reached close to eradication of polio and I want all parents in Afghanistan to provide polio vaccine to their children during this campaign.”

“We hope Afghanistan would soon become polio-free which would be a gift to the world.”
