MAZR-E-SHARIF (KABUL): Some former jihadi commanders in northern Afghanistan on Thursday pledged support to security forces against terrorists, official said.

During a meeting at the provincial council office in Balkh province, the jihadi leaders promised all-out help to the security in personnel in their campaign to rid the country of terror.

Clad in clothes made of the tri-colour Afghan national flag, the ex-jihadi leaders were also joined by youths. They offered to lay down their lives in defence of their motherland.

Mehdi Yar, head of the Mujahidin Council in the north, told Pajhwok Afghan News they heard of Islamic State’s activities in Afghanistan. “The mujahidin won’t remain silent if anyone tries to harm our country.”

Another former commander, Muhammad Zarif, said the IS would not be different from Taliban if they also hurt civilians. The mujahideen were willing to back their national security forces, he maintained.

A resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, Muhammad Qayyum, said he also participated in the gathering that vowed to defend the country. “If terrorists impose war on us, we will defend our country together with our forces.”
