2,000 lives lost to road accidents in 6 months

Feb 17, 2014 - 18:32

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): At least 2,000 people have been killed during the last six months in traffic accidents in the country, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) revealed on Monday.

Officials of Public Works Department, traffic police, civil society organisations and AIHRC met in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, and discussed the factors behind road accidents.

Hawa Alam Nuristani, the AIHRC provincial head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the figures were based a survey, which was aimed to ascertain the causes of road mishaps. She cited dilapidated roads and reckless driving as the main factors.

A similar survey would be conducted in other parts of the country as well, she added. An official of traffic police acknowledged road mishaps in Balkh had witnessed a 50 percent surge this year.
